A marketing research study of UAE universities by Thrivemattic, October 2026. Which universities do ChatGPT and Gemini recommend, and which do they leave out? When a student asks for the best university in an emirate, 21 of 79 UAE universities rarely or never come up.1

Methodology
Research methodology
We built the list from the CAA register of licensed institutions, the KHDA register of Dubai free-zone universities and the RAKEZ Academic Zone list. Each institution has one row per website. Data was collected in October 2026.

What we measured
- AI answers: 11 questions per emirate that name no university, asked to ChatGPT and Gemini 3 times, in English, from a UAE location. Plus 8 questions that name each university.
- Google: the same questions on Google from a UAE location, and a search for each university's name.
- Websites: a crawl of up to 75 pages per site, a Google Lighthouse mobile audit and a technology scan of each homepage.
- Directories, Reddit and links: listings checked by hand, UAE subreddit posts read for tone, referring domains from DataForSEO.
Limits
- Perplexity is missing. The collection tool failed on every request, so AI figures are ChatGPT and Gemini.
- AI answers vary from run to run. We quote figures across all 3 runs, never a single run, except AI sources, which come from one run and are marked so.
- Shares and counts are among the institutions we measure, not every college in the emirate. Partner colleges in the Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah free zones are not covered. In the small emirates the cohort is one to three universities.
- The website score measures the website. It is not a ranking of teaching, research or graduate outcomes.
- The questions were in English. Arabic questions are a separate study.

What AI and Google tell a student in the UAE
How often AI named each university
We asked ChatGPT and Gemini 11 questions per emirate that name no university, such as "best university in Dubai for engineering", 3 times over.
21 of 79 universities were rarely or never named: AI recommends from a short list.1
A university that is not on the list does not exist for the student who asks.
Dubai is where AI leaves the most out
Where are the universities AI leaves out?
Dubai has the most: 14 of 37 (38%) rarely or never named. Small emirates have 1 to 3 universities in the study.1
Dubai has the most universities and the hardest competition for a place in the answer. In the smaller emirates every university we measure was named, but AI there also names colleges outside our list (see below).
A better website does not get you named more
We split the 79 universities into a better half and a weaker half by website score, at 66. Then we counted how many questions AI named each one for.
Better websites are not named more often.2
Universities with a weaker website were named about as often. Website score and AI picks have almost no link (0.13). Whatever gets a university into the answer, it is mostly not on its own website.
AI knows almost every university by name
When a question names the university, AI answers well. Asked about the typical university by name, AI scores 90 of 100 (branded AI score). The lowest score is 52. On Google, 65 of 79 universities have their own site in first place for their name.2,3
Being known is not the same as being picked. The gap is in the questions where the student does not yet have a name.

Google shows lists, AI names universities
For the same questions, we checked whether Google shows the university's own site in its top results, and whether AI names it. Base: 2,569 university and question pairs.
AI names universities far more often than Google shows their own sites. 40 of 79 never reach Google's top results.3
On Google the student meets a ranking table or a directory first. The university's own page comes later, if at all.

What Gemini reads

AI names colleges the registers miss
Share of AI answers in each emirate that named a real college outside the official registers. Base: 88 answers per emirate (86 for Dubai).
Adding the RAKEZ campuses closes most of the Ras Al Khaimah gap (85% to 16%). Umm Al Quwain stays at 52%.5
The RAKEZ Academic Zone in Ras Al Khaimah licenses branch campuses that neither federal register lists. We added six of them. In Umm Al Quwain, AI still names colleges outside every list we used.
AI still recommends closed colleges
How often AI named colleges that have closed or lost recognition, across all answers to questions that named no university.
36 of 614 answers still name Horizon or Skyline after the licence was revoked.5
AI answers lag the news by months. For a vice chancellor, that is a reputation risk: what AI says about your university today may describe last year.

What the universities AI names have in common
We compared how often AI named each university with eight things we measured about it.
Being on lists and in conversations goes with AI picks. Website score does not. A link, not proof of cause.6
Universities that appear on "best universities" pages, in directories and on Reddit are the ones AI names. That points to where the work is: off your own website.
Directory listings

Shiksha lists the most: 65 of 79.6
Most universities are on the big directories. What the listing says is another matter: in 5 of 44 comparable fee pairs, the directory fee differs from the university's own.
Links: a size signal, not the cause

Other websites linking to the typical university8
Links go with AI picks (strength 0.48, where 1 means always together). Hold directory listings and Reddit mentions fixed and it falls to 0.05. Big, well-known universities have more links and more mentions. The mentions are what AI reads.8

Most discussed universities read positive. 25 have no posts at all.8
Where students talk, the tone is mostly positive. Many universities are not discussed at all, and that silence is a gap AI fills from other sources.

Most universities advertise, and Google comes first
Who advertises, and where
We checked the three public ad libraries for each university: Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google and LinkedIn. We counted only the university's own ads shown in the UAE: 2,479 ads in all.
56 of 79 universities run their own ads. Google is the most used.9
A Google ad counts here when it links to the university's own website. Note 9 says who runs those ads.
Few universities advertise everywhere
How many of the three libraries each university advertises on.
13 universities advertise on all three. 23 have none of their own ads in any of them.9
Each library reaches a student at a different moment: searching on Google, scrolling on Instagram, or reading LinkedIn at work. A university on one library misses the other two moments.
What the ads ask for

Own Meta and LinkedIn ads about admissions: apply, intake or deadline9
Most ads with a clear message ask for an application. On Meta, 132 of 417 ads carry an "Apply Now" button. Ads aimed at postgraduates (342) far outnumber ads aimed at undergraduates (92). Fewer ads talk about careers (86) or rankings (25), and few mention a scholarship or discount (21).9
UAE and India: the same share advertise
We counted India's private universities with the same rules, from our India study. India was checked in July 2026, at the height of its admissions season. The UAE was checked in October.
The same share advertise in both markets (71%). UAE universities use LinkedIn more: 37% against 19%.9
The UAE leans more on LinkedIn. India leans more on the "Apply Now" button. Our India report counts every ad under a university's name, so its own figures are higher than the ones here.

Slow pages, busy ad tags, little follow-up
Most sites are slow on mobile
We loaded each homepage the way a phone does. Google treats more than 4 seconds as poor.
The typical site takes 14.1 s to show its main content on a phone.7
66 of 78 sites take longer than 4 seconds. Google's speed test gives the typical homepage 52.5 of 100.
Ad tags are common, follow-up tools are not
We opened each site in a browser, with its apply or enquiry pages, and recorded the tools it loaded.
54 of 78 sites carry an ad tag. 27 show a system that follows up an enquiry.7
28 sites carry three or more ad tags. The tools that follow up an enquiry are rarer on the page: a CRM, marketing-automation or admissions system. Some universities run these behind their forms, where a scan cannot see them. Only 9 sites show a cookie consent tool, so 48 carry an ad tag with no consent tool seen. 27 carry an ad tag with no follow-up system seen.

What are the best universities in the UAE?
We do not rank universities on teaching or research. This study measures something else: which universities ChatGPT and Gemini name when a student asks for the best university in an emirate. Among the 79 universities in our main ranking, AI named 55 every time we asked, over 3 rounds, and rarely or never named 21. For a university, the useful question is whether it is among those 55, and what they have in common.
Which universities does AI name in Ras Al Khaimah?
American University of Ras Al Khaimah was named in 30 of 33 answers about the emirate, the most of any university. University of Greater Manchester Ras Al Khaimah came next with 26. Six campuses in the RAKEZ Academic Zone are on neither federal register, so we added them to the study.
Does AI still recommend colleges that have closed?
Yes. Horizon University College, formerly Skyline University College, lost its licence on 6 July 2026. In October 2026 ChatGPT and Gemini still named it in 36 of 614 answers. AI answers can be months behind the news, and a university cannot assume the answer about it is current.
Why is Perplexity not in the study?
The tool we use to collect Perplexity answers failed on every request during the study. We publish ChatGPT and Gemini only, and we will add Perplexity when the collection works.
