A student asks ChatGPT or Gemini for the best universities in a UAE emirate, and names none. AI rarely or never names 21 of the 79 universities we ranked. That is 27%. 10 were never named at all. Dubai is hardest: 14 of its 37 universities are rarely or never named.
AI does know these universities. Asked about the typical university by name, it scores 90 of 100. A better website does not help either. What goes with being picked is a place on other sites’ “best universities” lists.

Which UAE universities does AI leave out when nobody names one?
Most students start with a question, not a name. So we asked the questions they ask. For each emirate we wrote 11 questions such as “What are the best universities in Dubai?” None of them named a university. We call these no-name questions.
AI gives a different answer each time you ask. So we asked every question on ChatGPT and Gemini 3 times, in 3 rounds. Then we counted how many rounds named each of the 79 ranked universities.

55 universities came up every time. 21 came up once or never. For those 21, a student who asks AI for a shortlist usually gets one without them.

Dubai has the most universities left out
Universities rarely or never named, by emirate
Dubai has the most universities in the study, 37 of the 79. So the competition for a place in the answer is hardest there. In the smaller emirates, AI named nearly every university we measured. These counts cover the 100 universities we measured, not every college in each emirate.
Does AI know your university even if it does not recommend it?
Yes. We also asked 8 questions about each university by name, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers. We scored how complete and correct the answers were, out of 100. We call this the branded AI score.

Even the lowest score was 52 of 100. So AI has the facts. It leaves these universities out at one moment: when a student has no name in mind yet. That is the moment most of your marketing budget pays to reach.
Good answers by name also do not earn a place in the shortlist. The universities AI describes best are not the ones it recommends most.
Does a better website get a university into AI answers?
Not in our data. We scanned up to 75 pages of each university’s website and scored its content, depth, navigation and build. This is the website score. It measures the website. It does not rank the university.
A better website does not mean more AI picks

Each dot is one university. If better websites got more AI picks, the dots would climb from left to right. They do not.
The numbers say the same. AI never named 4 of the 42 universities in the better half of website scores, and 6 of the 37 in the weaker half.
A website rebuild is not an AI-visibility plan. Fix your website for the students who reach it. Do not expect the rebuild to put you in the shortlist.
How does ChatGPT choose which universities to recommend?
OpenAI and Google do not publish how their answers pick universities. We can measure what goes with being picked. We took eight measures and checked how closely each one goes with how often AI named the university. We call this the link strength. It runs from minus 1 to 1. Near 1, the two go together. Near 0, there is no link.
Lists and mentions go with AI picks

The strongest link is with “best universities in [emirate]” pages, at 0.72. The more of these pages list a university, the more often AI names it. Directories, Reddit posts and ranking sites come next.
Website score and page speed show almost no link.
A link does not prove cause. But every strong measure points the same way. AI repeats what other sites say about your university. For a marketing team, that moves the work off your own website and onto the pages students and AI read about you:
- The “best universities in [emirate]” pages that rank on Google.
- Your listings on the directories and ranking sites that cover the UAE.
- The Reddit threads where students compare universities.
Are ChatGPT’s university recommendations consistent?
No. Ask the same question twice and you can get a different list. In our study, the number of universities AI never named changed from one round to the next.
That is why every figure in this post counts all 3 rounds together. One check of ChatGPT, on one day, tells you little about where your university stands.
Two more limits apply. Perplexity is missing, because our data supplier could not collect its answers. So the figures cover ChatGPT and Gemini only. And the questions were in English.
How can a university check whether AI names it?
You can run a small version of our method yourself:
- Write the questions a student asks before they have a name in mind. Use your emirate and your main programmes.
- Ask each one on ChatGPT and Gemini more than once. Sign out first, so your own history does not change the answer.
- Count the answers that name your university, and note the sites each answer cites.
- Repeat every month. One round is not a result.
