Google gives “best universities in Dubai” searches to ranking sites and directories. We read 229 Google result pages for “best universities” searches across the seven emirates. For each university and each search, we checked whether its own website made the top results. It did in only 13% of checks. 40 of the 79 universities we ranked never appeared at all.
These lists matter for AI too. The universities on more “best universities” pages are the ones ChatGPT and Gemini name more often. A better website barely makes a difference.

Who does Google show for “best universities in Dubai”?
We took the questions a student asks before they have a name in mind, such as “best universities in Dubai”. We searched each one on Google from a UAE location, in 3 rounds. Then we counted which websites filled the top results.
Ranking sites and directories take the page

QS Top Universities appeared on 142 of the 229 pages. StudyFromUAE, Educations.com and Edarabia follow. Facebook, Instagram and Reddit also take places that a university’s own page could hold.
We did not capture ads. So these results are the unpaid part of the page only.
Why does Google show ranking sites instead of university websites?
Because the search asks for a list. Someone who types “best universities in Dubai” wants to compare several names. A ranking page or a directory gives them that. A university’s own website describes one university, so Google rarely picks it for this search.

AI is more generous. ChatGPT and Gemini named the university in 37% of the same checks. But a university that Google leaves out still loses the student who clicks the first result.
Does being on those lists help with AI answers?
It goes with it. We took eight measures and checked how closely each one goes with how often AI named each university. We call this the link strength. Near 1, the two go together. Near 0, there is no link.

The strongest link is with the “best universities in [emirate]” pages, at 0.72. Directories and ranking sites come next. Website score shows almost no link.

Universities that Google shows more often are also named more often by AI. The dots climb from left to right.
One limit is honest to state. When AI cites its sources, directories are a small share. Directories were 2% of ChatGPT’s citations and 17% of Gemini’s, from one round of questions. So AI may not read the lists directly. The lists and the AI answers may both reflect the same reputation. A link does not prove cause.
Which universities are invisible on both Google and AI?
AI named 25 of the 79 universities in fewer than 10% of the questions. Of those 25, 22 never appeared in Google’s top results either. They are the dark dots in the chart above.
We do not publish the names. For these universities, a student who starts with a search or with AI has almost no way to find them.
How accurate are directory profiles of UAE universities?
Most universities are listed somewhere. We checked ten directories and ranking sites for each of the 79 universities.

Being listed is only the start. A profile helps you most when it sends the reader on to your own website. Most do not.

Edarabia linked to the university in 39 of its 43 profiles. Shiksha linked in none of 62.
Fees are a second problem. We compared directory fees with the fee each university publishes for the same programme. Two separate checks agreed that 5 of the 44 fees we could compare were different. A wrong fee on a directory is the first number a student may see.
What should a university fix first?
Start where students and AI already look:
- Search “best universities in [your emirate]” and open the first ten results. Check whether each list includes you, and ask the ones that do not.
- Claim your profile on each directory. Correct the fees and programmes, and add a link to your own website.
- Check every profile again each term. Fees and programmes change, and the directories do not always follow.
- Then check what ChatGPT and Gemini say when a student names no university.
