Key Findings
What 18 India-campus audits actually revealed
Our 2026 audit ran across 8 data sources per campus. Five findings reshape how a foreign university’s marketing office should think about the India launch surface.
- The four operational campuses are five months ahead of the field. Aberdeen Mumbai, Deakin GIFT City, Southampton Delhi, and Wollongong GIFT City are already running classes. Their websites are live, indexed, and Reddit-discussed. The 12 launching August 2026 still ship subdomain microsites with thin content depth: applications open, but the digital story does not.
- The brand search is largely owned; the buyer query is not. A fresh SERP collection (19 May 2026) shows 14 of 18 campuses holding Google position one for “[University] India,” 15 of 18 in the top three, and only 3 surfacing a Wikipedia entry. The aggregator-dominance pattern of the domestic-university cohort does not hold at the brand-query level. The unclaimed contest is the higher-intent buyer query (“[University] [city] fees”), which we have not yet measured.
- AI-search visibility is universal: average 89/100, range 82-93. Every campus in the cohort surfaces in ChatGPT for parent-brand queries (28 mentions average across 5 India-context prompts). 16 of 18 register positive sentiment; 2 mixed. Every campus is known to ChatGPT; the differentiator is whether the India-specific citation goes to your subdomain or to Shiksha and Careers360.
- Reddit conversation is highest at the parent-brand level, and it inherits. Across 1,660 posts analyzed, the cohort’s mean sentiment is +63. UNSW Bengaluru, Western Sydney, and University of York’s Mumbai campus inherit the most parent-brand conversation volume (420 posts combined, 25% of total). The India-specific narrative is younger and concentrated on the operational four.
- Mobile performance is the hidden gating factor. The cohort’s Lighthouse mobile-performance mean is 48, better than the Indian private-university benchmark, yet the operational campuses (Aberdeen, Deakin, Southampton) average 8–14 points below their parent-university homepage. Indian students arriving on mobile from a Reels ad or an aggregator click are landing on slower-than-expected pages at the moment of decision.

Methodology
Eight data sources, triangulated per campus
Each campus was audited across eight independent data sources. Findings cited in the deep-dive reports cross-validate at least two sources before reaching a headline.
Website Discovery + Content
Crawled each campus subdomain or India-section. Operational campuses average 77 pages; pre-launch microsites average 92 pages. Extracted admission-related URLs across 21 categories.
Google Lighthouse
Mobile-first audits across Performance, SEO, Accessibility, and Best Practices. Cohort means: 48, 91, 94, 66.
Google SERP
First-page Google results for each campus’s brand name plus the India-context query (city + parent university). Tests whether the campus owns its own brand search, what aggregators present, and whether Wikipedia outranks the campus.
Reddit Sentiment
Student and aspirant discussions across 10+ India-education subreddits including r/Indian_Academia, r/IndiaSpeaks, r/IndianStudents, and r/StudyAbroad. The unfiltered student voice — fee transparency, GIFT City reality, parent-campus comparisons.
ChatGPT Visibility
Per-campus prompts across India-context fact patterns (“[University] in Mumbai admissions 2026,” “Australian university GIFT City fees”) to measure mention frequency, depth, and citation accuracy. Tests AI-search readiness, the next discovery surface.
AI-Readability + Tech Stack
Per-campus audit of JSON-LD schema (Course, FAQ, EducationalOrganization), llms.txt, semantic HTML, content rendering. Plus tech-stack fingerprint covering CMS, JS frameworks, analytics, and marketing tools.

Cohort caveat. 2 of 18 campuses (La Trobe, Lancaster) are tracked as in-development with no public website yet. Discovery and Lighthouse statistics cite the 15 campuses with live URLs; Reddit and ChatGPT findings cite all 18 campus brand names. One campus (Deakin GIFT City) returns 403 to non-browser crawlers, so its site-side metrics are reconstructed from indexed pages and parent-domain proxies where appropriate. SERP (Section 04) was freshly collected on 19 May 2026 for the “[University] India” brand query — 15 of 18 campuses returned data; 3 (pre-launch or crawler-blocked) returned none. Higher-intent buyer queries (“[city] fees”) remain a separate, scheduled measurement.

01
AI Visibility & Generative-Engine Readiness
Every campus surfaces in ChatGPT, with an average AI Visibility Score of 89/100 across the 18-campus cohort, range 82-93. ChatGPT already knows your campus. What now decides the outcome is how India-specific the citation is, and whether your subdomain or the aggregator wins it.
- Cohort AI Visibility avg: 89/100 (range 82–93). Wollongong GIFT City leads at 93; Deakin and Lancaster tie at 92; UWA and Surrey trail at 82–83. Differences are driven by India-context citation depth, not parent-brand recognition.
- 16 of 18 campuses surface as positive in ChatGPT sentiment; 2 are mixed (Surrey, UWA, both with India-context regulatory ambiguity surfacing in responses).
- Average India-context mention count: 28 per campus across 5 fact-pattern prompts (general, admissions/fees, brand reputation, peer comparison, student outlook). Lancaster and Deakin lead at 35; UWA and UNSW trail at 22–26.
- Aggregator dominance compounds. When Shiksha, Careers360, or Studies-Overseas own AI-search citations for “GIFT City university fees” or “UK university Mumbai,” they earn the next student’s first prompt, and the next, and the next. The 18-month window to ship official-source structured data is open now.

02
The Admissions Journey
Only a handful of campuses currently ship a substantive India admission page. The rest, overwhelmingly pre-launch, route prospective students into the parent university’s application system, where international fee structures and non-India deadlines collide with what an Indian applicant expects.
- 6 of 18 campuses publish a substantive India admission page, scored on content completeness, depth, navigation, and technical execution. Liverpool, IED Italy and Bristol lead.
- The other 12 have no India admission page yet, and most are pre-launch. Where an “Apply Now” exists, it routes into the parent’s UCAS-style or Australian application flow, which defaults to international-student context rather than an India-specific intake.
- Among campuses that do have a page, the spread is 20 points, from Liverpool at 94 down to Coventry at 74: a wide gap in how completely the India journey is documented.
- The window is now. The months before the August 2026 intake are the time to ship an India-specific admission page, before the first cohort starts searching and the aggregators define the answer.
| Campus | Score |
|---|---|
| Liverpool | 94 |
| IED Italy | 93 |
| Bristol | 93 |
| Aberdeen Mumbai | 92 |
| Illinois Tech | 83 |
| Coventry | 74 |
03
Reddit Sentiment & The Student Voice
Indian Reddit is where applicants debate fee value, GIFT City liveability, and parent-campus comparisons. Sentiment is mostly positive, but conversation volume concentrates on three campuses that have shipped early student stories.
- 1,660+ posts analyzed across 10+ India-focused subreddits. Cohort sentiment averages +63 on a −100 to +100 scale.
- Top three discussed campuses: UNSW Bengaluru (149 posts), Western Sydney (147), York Mumbai (124). Together they account for 25% of total cohort conversation volume.
- 15 of 18 campuses carry India-context Reddit conversation. Three have none yet: Deakin (crawler-blocked), Lancaster and La Trobe (pre-launch). The lowest non-zero is Illinois Tech at 79 posts. The silent ones miss the early student-narrative inheritance that compounds enrolment confidence.
- The reality-check thread. Across operational campuses, Reddit threads consistently surface fee-versus-Australia-AUD comparisons and city-of-campus liveability debates. The campus marketing site that addresses these directly (FAQ, transparent fee table in INR) wins the linkback economy.
| Campus | Score |
|---|---|
| Illinois Tech | 86 |
| Aberdeen Mumbai | 76 |
| UWA | 75 |
| Wollongong GIFT | 75 |
| Surrey | 74 |
| Western Sydney | 69 |
| Liverpool | 68 |
| Queen's Belfast | 63 |
| Coventry | 63 |
| York Mumbai | 59 |
| IED Italy | 56 |

| Southampton Delhi | 45 |
| UNSW Bengaluru | 44 |

04
SERP & Brand Protection
The inverse of the Indian private-university cohort, where Wikipedia and aggregators dominate. A fresh SERP collection (19 May 2026) of each campus’s “[University] India” brand query shows the official campus domain winning position one almost every time it returns data. The brand search is the campus’s to lose, not to win back.
- 14 of 18 campuses own Google position one for their “[University] India” brand query; 15 of 18 sit in the top three (Aberdeen Mumbai is #2). The aggregator-dominance pattern that defines the domestic-university SERP does not hold at the brand-query level here.
- Only 3 of 18 surface a Wikipedia entry (Illinois Tech, UNSW, UWA). For the rest the official campus domain is the top result, not a third-party encyclopedia page.
- 3 campuses return no SERP data: Deakin GIFT City (crawler-blocked), Lancaster and La Trobe (pre-launch). Their brand search is uncontested and unclaimed: the cheapest position-one in the cohort, available now.
- The contest moves to the buyer-intent query. Only “[University] India” was measured. “[University] [city] fees” and “GIFT City university fees” (where aggregators have historically competed) are the next battleground, not yet measured.
| Outcome | Campuses |
|---|---|
| Position 1 | 14 |
| Position 2 | 1 |
| No data | 3 |

Technology & Performance Landscape
Foreign-university India sites are mostly subdomains or microsite installs spun up on the parent’s tech stack — Drupal at the UK universities, custom CMS at the Australian ones. The build-decision made in a London or Melbourne IT meeting twelve months ago defines what’s fixable today.
- Cohort Lighthouse mobile-performance mean: 48. 0 of 15 live sites score above 80 on mobile performance. Operational campuses average 8–14 points below their parent .edu homepage.
- CMS distribution: 6 WordPress, 2 Drupal, 7 custom or unidentified. The Drupal-heavy UK campuses inherit parent-site theming with limited India-specific deviation room.
- Marketing tools installed: 15 of 15 install Google Analytics or Tag Manager per campus on average. Most install Google Analytics; few install conversion-tracking pixels for the India-specific application funnel.
- a small minority have a discoverable sitemap.xml on the India campus subdomain. The cheapest SEO win, generating a campus-specific sitemap, is shipped on most operational campuses but missing on most pre-launch ones.
| CMS | Sites |
|---|---|
| WordPress | 6 |
| Drupal | 2 |
| Custom / unknown | 7 |
| Mobile performance | Value |
| Minimum | 30 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Six questions an India launch team asks first
Practical questions, practical answers. Each answer carries at least one verified data point you can quote in a board memo or parent-university update.
What does this research cover?
18 foreign universities setting up India campuses across UK, Australia, US, and Italy, covering GIFT City IFSCA, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Greater Noida. Each was audited across 8 data sources: website discovery and content extraction, Google Lighthouse, Google SERP, Reddit sentiment across 10+ India-education subreddits, ChatGPT visibility prompts on India-context queries, AI-readability foundation signals (JSON-LD, llms.txt, semantic HTML, content rendering), and tech-stack fingerprint detection.

Why study foreign-university India campuses separately from Indian private universities?
Different launch context, different buyer journey. Most foreign campuses launch August 2026 against a regulatory clock (UGC Foreign Higher Educational Institutions Regulations 2023, IFSCA fast-track for GIFT City). They compete on global brand prestige and inherit parent QS rankings. Indian private universities (n=90 in our parallel study) compete on NIRF rank and domestic reputation, with admission cycles in January–July rather than August. Marketing playbooks are not interchangeable.
Which AI-search signals matter most for an India campus in 2026?
Three JSON-LD schemas (Course, FAQ, and EducationalOrganization) turn an India campus subdomain into a citable AI-search answer. Across the 18-campus cohort, adoption on the India-specific subdomain is consistently below the parent .edu rate. The window to ship these before the August 2026 launch wave is now: AI-search models retrain on a 1–2 year lag, so what’s installed in mid-2026 shows up in 2027 model cycles when the second cohort begins searching.
What should we prioritise before August 2026?
Three items in order: (1) Ship a campus-specific sitemap.xml plus EducationalOrganization JSON-LD schema on the India subdomain; together these address two of the cohort’s biggest discovery gaps without touching the parent CMS. (2) Publish India fees in INR (or USD with INR conversion) on a public page indexable by Google, since most pre-launch campuses route to a parent calculator that defaults to international rates. (3) Add a campus-named application route (“Apply to Aberdeen Mumbai”) rather than the parent’s UCAS / Australian system, because Indian applicants drop off the parent flow at the international-fee threshold.
What’s the next research drop?
Two waves planned for the next twelve months. First: a re-audit of the operational four (Aberdeen, Deakin, Southampton, Wollongong) at the six-month mark to measure how digital posture moved post-first-cohort. Second: a launch-day capture of the August 2026 intake campuses to baseline their Day-1 digital surface against the operational four. Subscribe via the form above to receive both.
