We analysed the search engine results pages for 90 private and 104 deemed universities to measure brand protection, social visibility, and digital maturity. The findings reveal a significant divide — and clear opportunities.

Methodology

This SERP analysis covers 194 Indian universities (90 private + 104 deemed). Data was collected in January 2026 as part of Thrivemattic’s Private University Marketing Research.

Data Collection

  • Branded search queries run through Google SERP API for each university's official name
  • Top 10 organic results captured and classified
  • Social media profiles, Wikipedia pages, and education aggregators identified
  • SERP position recorded as the rank of the university's official domain

Classification Criteria

  • Position: Rank of official website in organic results (1-10, or 0 if not found)
  • Social presence: Count of distinct social platforms in top 10
  • Wikipedia: Binary presence/absence in top 10 results
  • Edu platforms: Count of aggregator sites (Shiksha, CollegeDunia, etc.)

Maturity Scoring

  • High: Position #1 + Wikipedia + 3 or more social profiles
  • Medium: Top 3 + Wikipedia or 2+ social profiles
  • Low: Below top 3 or missing key signals

Limitations

  • SERP results are location-dependent; data reflects searches from an Indian IP
  • Rankings fluctuate; this is a snapshot from January 2026
  • Paid ads and featured snippets were excluded from position tracking
